Mi chiedo: conoscete un client e-mail che riesce a sopportare un archivio locale con migliaia di e-mail, 2 GB di file in totlae, senza battere ciglio? I dbx sistematicamente si azzoppano e devo recuperare le e-mail perdute con l’ottimo Oe-mail Recovery.
Altrimenti dovrei usare un Gmail con forwarding dalla mia casella con dominio, e gestire tutto via Web, ma mi sembra laborioso e comunque voglio conservare su hard disk il tutto.

per ora mi trovo bene con Thunderbird. Ho “dimolti” mega di posta anche io e li gestisce senza problemi, tramite le cartelle locali.
Il backup e il recover si puo’ fare attraverso MozBackup.
Ho usato anche Sylpheed e Pegasus Mail, ma mai con larghe quantità di posta.

E, a proposito dell’eventualita’ gmail e di domande senza risposte positive: e’ ancora senza speranza l’idea di trasferire tutte le vecchie e-mail su gmail con un meccanismo diverso dal bouncing (che preservi la data originale di ogni singolo messaggio)?

Io sono quasi sempre rimasto sotto il giga, anche perchè sono abituato a fare frequenti backup della posta e quindi a cancellare quella che non è di immediata utilità.
Finora, come dicevo, nessun problema comunque. In TB se non sbaglio si può spostare la posta nell’account locale e quindi tenere “libere” le cartelle dell’account, in modo da alleggerire il tutto.
Un altro client con cui mi sono trovato bene è Foxmail.
Mi sono imbattuto in questi thread, magari possono dare qualche idea su come TB gestisce le grandi quantità di posta. Ciao

Da altre ricerche che ho fatto, emergerebbe che Outlook 2003 non ha questo limite (e nemmeno la versione di OE per Vista, ma vai a fidarti!!) che TB lo avrebbe ma potrebbe essere superato attraverso l’adozione del motore SQLite (sottoforma di patch e anche nelle nuove versioni di TB) e che alcuni hanno usato con successo larghe quantità di posta con il client di opera, M2.

io ho risolto spostando tutto su GMail, anche se lasciandomi tutte le mail sul server aziendale come backup.
GMail, opportunamente patchato con gli script che trovi su http://www.userscript.org (tag GMAIL), sta diventando per me un client di posta eletronica assolutamente insostituibile, anche per gestire piu’ account. Alcuni commenti ulteriori qui

L’idea di Luca di trasferire tutto su Gmail è forse la soluzione più semplice ed immediata. L’unico neo è che le mail risiedono su un sever non tuo e a me personalmente mi fa strano dare tanta fiducia a google, però capisco che è un’impressione più psicologica che altro. Una alternativa potrebbe essere zimbra.com . Attacchi un pc da 200 € con linux, sul sito puoi scaricarti anche una la macchina virtuale per provarlo, e alla tua adsl associ un dominio no-ip e controlli la posta via web ovunque tu sia, ma le mail continuano a risiedere su un pc tuo, ti fai tu il backup etc. Lo svantaggio sta nel fatto che devi tenerti un pc acceso sempre…
In realtà, credo sia solamente un problema di paranoia da “big brother” :-). Personalmente non ci sto pensando e molti altri professionisti hanno fatto questa migrazione. Devo dire che mi trovo molto bene, soprattutto perchè la ricerca delle mail è diventata veramente una cosa banale e efficientissima (beh, powered by Google…) e con gli script di cui parlavo prima, l’uso è davvero user-friendly. A quel link che ti ho segnalato nell’altro commento, trovi:
– script per integrare un preview pane per le tue mail semplicemente usando il tasto destro
– aggiunta delle cartelle ricerca come su TB
– miglioramento dei label
– aggiunta di una o piu’ icone nella lista delle email che ti indicano la tipologia di allegato
– scelta dell’identità con cui vuoi comporre la mail molto piu’ rapida, cambiando automaticamente la signature in funzione dell’identità
– css personalizzati per modificare l’aspetto di gmail a tuo piacimento
– etc. etc.
Insomma, gli fai fare davvero quello che vuoi 🙂

Da esperienze precedenti sui client aziendali, assicuro che OE crasha quando la cartella dell’inbox supera il doppio della ram.
La soluzione per questo client è dividere le email in sottocartelle (anno, mese, quello che vuoi) e a seguito della divisione compattare l’inbox (o la cartella che si è suddivisa), si tratta chiaramente di un intervento di manutenzione che porta via del tempo, ma utile ad evitare l’impossibilità di leggere gli archivi.
Io con Outlook 2003 conservo le email dal 1997 (anche lo spam!) e attualmente ricevo ca. 200 email al giorno. Sono arrivato ad avere un .PST di 7GB e non ho alcun problema.
Mi pare che il limite dichiarato per il nuovo formato .PST sia di vari terabyte.
Per luca: il GMLoader importa le vecchie mail in gmail, ma assegnando loro la data di bounce: in pratica ti ritrovi tutte le mail degli ultimi 3 anni datate nell’arco di 5 minuti (fa)…
Purtroppo non ho ancora trovato una soluzione a questo problema… 🙁
